If you’ve ever envied the pristine, showroom-like finish of a professionally detailed car and thought, “How can I do that myself?”—you’re in the right place. At Dr. Clean Mobile Detailing, we love empowering our clients with the knowledge to maintain their vehicles like pros. This guide is packed with unique, high-value tips you won’t find anywhere else and are a result of 25 years of professional experience. Ready to roll up your sleeves? Let’s get to it!
1. Steamer Tool for Crevices
Ever struggled to clean those narrow gaps around your gear shifter or in between seat tracks? Grab a steamer like this one that we use daily! Run the steamer along the crevices to pick up debris, crumbs, and dust. It’s cheap, effective, and surprisingly satisfying. Did we mention it disinfects?
Dos:
- Use distilled water in your steamer for best results. It won’t leave behind hard water.
- Keep the steam nozzle about an inch away from surfaces.
- Allow steamer to fully reach peak steam before cleaning or you’ll spray a bunch of hot water in your vehicle.
- Use a microfiber cloth to cover when you’re steaming into a cup holder or other small spots to both avoid debris, but also trap heat inside the spot to keep the steam working.
Don’ts:
- Put the steam nozzle right on leather or other soft surfaces–it can scar them.
- Hold the steam nozzle on one spot for too long
- Let the nozzle touch you–it will burn you!
Pro Tip: Pair it with a spritz of a gentle all-purpose cleaner like Adams’ All Purpose Cleaner for an even deeper clean.
2. DIY Spot Cleaner for Stains
Stubborn stains on your seats or carpets? Here’s a DIY cleaner that’s safe and effective:
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 tablespoon Dawn dish soap
- 1 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide
Mix these in a spray bottle, apply to the stain, and gently scrub with a microfiber cloth or a drill brush attachment.
Dos:
- Start with less liquid and introduce more if the stain isn’t coming out.
- Always start in an inconspicuous area first to see if dying of material occurs.
- Use your steam gun to break up the stain after you’ve sprayed solution on the stain.
- Use a toothbrush or medium bristle brush to agitate the stain if needed.
- Use a wire bristle brush on carpets if a stain is stubborn.
- Use a Magic Eraser on leather with your DIY cleaner. Make sure the sponge is wet and do not scrub hard. If leather color is coming off, immediately stop. Follow up with a leather conditioner.
Don’ts
- Saturate any area with too much stain remover
- Use wire bristle brushes on leather or other soft surfaces
- Spray cleaner on a surface without wiping it up after
Pro Tip: If you’re unsure about the stain type, start with a mild cleaner like Folex Instant Carpet Spot Remover.
3. Rinseless Car Wash
Rinseless wash solution is incredible! It’s so fast and uses very little water. Simply put ¼ a cap full into a large spray bottle with water. Spray one panel down at a time, let it dwell to lift the dirt, and then use clean microfiber cloths folded in fourths (which you’ll rotate to a clean side each time) to wipe down each panel. It’s just that easy!

4. Freeze Gum and Adhesive Residue
Got gum or sticker residue on your interior or exterior? Freeze it with an ice cube or a can of compressed air turned upside down. Once frozen, scrape it off gently with a plastic razor blade.
Pro Tip: Finish with Goo Gone Automotive Spray to remove any leftover adhesive.
5. DIY Odor Neutralizer
This treatment system is one you’ll need to read instructions very carefully as it can be hazardous. However, it is entirely safe to do when carried out properly. If you’re truly too nervous to give it a go, you can schedule with your professional detailers to have it administered. In short, this is the most effective way to eliminate odors and kill all forms of bacteria living in your vehicle.
Pro Tip: For a pleasant smell after odor neutralization, douse cotton balls in your favorite essential oil or scent and place them in a small jar under the seat.
6. The “Clay Mitt” Upgrade
Clay bars are a classic tool for removing contaminants from your car’s paint, but clay mitts are a game-changer. They’re reusable, easier to handle, and cover more surface area quickly. Use with a high-quality lubricant like our favorite rinseless wash for best results.

7. Protect Your Tires Like a Pro
Tires lose their shine quickly without proper care. After cleaning, apply a water-based tire dressing with a foam applicator. Avoid silicone-based products, as they attract dust and degrade rubber over time.

8. Don’t Forget the Headliner
Your headliner is a magnet for dirt and oils. Gently clean it with a microfiber cloth dampened with an upholstery cleaner. Avoid oversaturating, as excess moisture can weaken the adhesive.
Pro Tip: Try the same Folex spot cleaner mentioned above for incredible, fast results
9. Seal It Right
Sealants add an extra layer of protection to your car’s paint, making it easier to clean and resistant to UV damage. Apply a paint sealant like graphene ceramic coating and boost it every six months for optimal results.
