What Should a Full Car Detail Include, and What Costs Extra?
A full car detail should clean both the interior and exterior, but the words “full detail” do not describe a universal checklist. Before booking, confirm the exact work, the condition the quote assumes, and whether paint correction, ceramic coating, odor treatment, or engine bay cleaning are part of the selected package.
At Dr. Clean Detailing in Layton, our combined interior and exterior services have three levels: Total Check-Up for maintenance, Total Rehab for a deeper clean, and Total Flatline for extensive restoration. That structure lets us match the work to the vehicle instead of selling the same scope to every driver in Davis County or the rest of Northern Utah.
What belongs in a full interior and exterior detail?
For a maintained vehicle, expect meaningful attention on both sides of the doors. Dr. Clean’s Total Check-Up lists trash removal, vacuuming, light carpet and seat stain treatment, cleaning of interior surfaces, mats, cup holders, cargo space, door jambs, headliner, and glass. Outside, it lists a hand wash and dry, light bug and grime removal, wheels, tires, wheel wells, exterior glass, and tire protection.
That is a substantial maintenance service. It is not a promise to reverse years of embedded stains or correct the paint. Ask the detailer to show the included areas in writing and tell them which spots matter most to you.
How Dr. Clean’s three full-detail packages differ
Total Check-Up: maintenance
A fit for vehicles that are already looked after and need a thorough routine clean inside and out. The published car price is $195, with vehicle-size pricing shown on the package page. Stain and bug treatment are described as light.
Total Rehab: deeper cleaning
For vehicles with more buildup, Rehab includes carpet and seat stain treatment and lists pet hair removal. Its exterior checklist adds black-trim restoration and hand wax to the hand wash, wheels, tires, and glass. The published car price is $325. Pet hair is part of the listed Rehab scope; it should not be described as an automatic extra charge in every case.
Total Flatline: extensive restoration
For severe neglect or a much larger reset, Flatline lists deep interior extraction and sanitization, stain and odor treatment, a full exterior wash and decontamination, and engine bay cleaning. The published car price is $425. Odor treatment is listed, but the outcome still depends on the source and condition of the vehicle.
Read our guide to Check-Up, Rehab, and Flatline if you are unsure where your vehicle fits. Send recent photos and describe stains, pet hair, odors, and neglected areas before accepting a quote.
What usually needs a separate quote?
Paint correction and scratch repair
A hand wash and wax can improve appearance, but machine polishing is a different process. Correcting swirls, oxidation, or eligible scratches requires paint inspection, preparation, and controlled polishing. Deeper damage may need paint repair rather than polishing. Ask what improvement is realistic before approving work.
Our article on scratch repair, paint correction, or repaint explains how we diagnose the difference. A normal full detail should not be sold as if it includes paint correction unless the quote explicitly says so.
Ceramic coating and added surface protection
Dr. Clean lists Gtechniq ceramic coating options separately from paint correction. A hand wax included with Total Rehab is not the same service as a professionally installed coating. If you are comparing ceramic coating in Layton or searching for the best ceramic coating for cars in Salt Lake City, compare the preparation, the specific product, aftercare, and the full quoted scope.
Our ceramic coating services page explains the available products and preparation choices. Our guide to protection beyond paint covers glass, wheels, leather, fabric, and other compatible surfaces. Ask which surfaces will actually be treated and what each protection service costs.
Specialty cleaning beyond the agreed package
A vehicle may have contamination that is different from ordinary buildup: a hidden spill, repeated smoke exposure, water intrusion, or damaged materials. The selected package still matters. Flatline lists stain and odor treatment; that does not guarantee that every hidden source can be reached or that an active leak can be solved through detailing.
We recommend explaining the history before booking and agreeing on the scope after an assessment. Our guide to smoke and stubborn odors describes why the source determines the plan. Any additional treatment or repair should be explained and approved separately before it is added.
Is pet hair, odor removal, or an engine bay always extra?
No universal rule applies. On Dr. Clean’s published pages, pet hair appears in the Total Rehab checklist. Odor treatment and engine bay cleaning appear in Total Flatline. Those services are not listed in every package, and the exact condition still needs to be assessed. Ask which package the quote covers and whether the amount of work falls within its described scope.
That question is more useful than asking whether a shop “charges extra for pet hair.” It helps prevent two disappointments: paying for a service you do not need, or booking a maintenance clean for a restoration-level vehicle.
What does a full car detail cost at Dr. Clean?
Our published combined interior and exterior package prices vary by vehicle size and level of work. These are Dr. Clean’s current listed prices, not an estimate of what every detailer in Utah charges:
Car: Total Check-Up $195; Total Rehab $325; Total Flatline $425.
Standard SUV: Total Check-Up $245; Total Rehab $365; Total Flatline $465.
Large SUV, truck, or minivan: Total Check-Up $285; Total Rehab $385; Total Flatline $485.
Confirm your vehicle category, condition, location, and any requested specialty service when you book. For a fuller explanation of how to choose among those prices, read our Layton full-detail cost guide after it is published. Until then, the linked package pages show the current public prices.
Five questions to ask before booking any full detail
- Is this interior and exterior, or only one of the two?
- Which exact areas and treatments are included in the quoted package?
- Does the quote assume a maintained vehicle, a deeper clean, or major restoration?
- Are pet hair, odor, engine bay, paint correction, and protection covered at this service level?
- How will you tell me about a change in scope or price before starting extra work?
A good answer should be specific to your vehicle. Photos help, but some stains, damage, and odors require an in-person look. Time also varies with size, condition, and drying; our guide to professional detailing timelines explains why.

Frequently asked questions
Does a full detail include shampooing the seats and carpet?
It depends on the package and what the material needs. Dr. Clean’s Total Check-Up lists light stain treatment, Total Rehab lists carpet and seat stain removal, and Total Flatline lists deep interior extraction. Ask what process applies to your vehicle rather than assuming every fabric area receives the same treatment.
Does a full detail include wax?
Total Rehab specifically lists hand wax. Total Check-Up lists an exterior wash and tire care, but its public checklist does not list hand wax. Confirm the selected package and protection step before booking.
Does a full detail include engine bay cleaning?
Dr. Clean lists engine bay cleaning in Total Flatline. It is not in the public Check-Up or Rehab inclusion lists. If you want it with another package, ask for the available option and quote.
Does a full detail remove every stain and odor?
No honest detailer can promise that before inspecting the cause, material, and wear. Cleaning can make a major improvement, but permanent staining, damaged surfaces, hidden contamination, or ongoing moisture may limit the result.
Can I add ceramic coating to a detail?
Ask us to assess the paint and recommend suitable preparation, correction if needed, and a coating separately. A ceramic coating is not the same as the wax listed in Rehab, and it should be quoted as its own service
